How to create a new repository in GitHub

Learn how to create a new repository on GitHub, set its visibility, and add a README, .gitignore, and license in a few clicks.

Steps

View newly created Task-tracker repository — Confirm that the interface navigates to the Task-tracker repository page, where you can see the repository header, navigation, main code section, and README content.
Keep configuration section in pre-creation view — Stay on the configuration section containing visibility, README, .gitignore, license options, and the Create repository button while you maintain the settings before submission.
Perform final review of repository settings — Review the description field and all configuration options, including visibility, README, .gitignore, license, and the green Create repository button before proceeding.
Adjust Add README toggle in configuration — Focus on the Add README toggle within the configuration section to decide whether the new repository should start with an initial README file.
Reveal configuration and Create repository button — Move down the Create a new repository page to expose visibility settings, README, .gitignore, license options, and the green Create repository button at the bottom.
Fill owner and repository name fields — Stay on the Create a new repository page and configure the general settings by confirming the owner, entering the repository name, and leaving description empty if not needed.
Open New repository creation form — Move from the dashboard to the New repository page where you can edit the owner, repository name, optional description, and initial configuration options.
Review repositories on GitHub dashboard — Scan your GitHub dashboard home with the repositories list, global search, filters, and recent activity feed to confirm where to start.
