How to add table of contents to your guide

Add a table of contents to your Floik guide to help users navigate steps easily and improve the overall readability of your documentation.

Crafted using Floik

The table of contents is a navigation panel that lists all the steps in a published Step-by-Step Guide. Viewers can use it to jump straight to any step instead of scrolling through the guide in order. It's turned off by default, and you enable it per share method.

Why use it

Longer guides get harder to navigate the more steps you add. A table of contents lets viewers scan the full flow at a glance and return to a specific step later without retracing their path. It's especially useful for help center guides and SOPs, where readers often come back for one particular step.

How to enable the table of contents

  1. Publish your step-by-step guide and open the Share tab.
  2. Under Share link, click Customise.
  3. In the Customise share link panel, select the Table of Contents checkbox.
  4. Click Apply to save your changes.
  5. Click Copy link to get the share URL, then share it anywhere.
  6. Repeat the same steps under Embed code and Script so the table of contents appears wherever you embed the guide.

Best practices

  • Enable it on guides with more than a handful of steps — short guides read fine without it.
  • Keep your step titles short and descriptive, since they're what viewers see in the table of contents.
  • Check the customisation for each share method you use. Enabling it on the share link doesn't apply it to embeds.
  • Open your published guide after applying changes to confirm the panel appears as expected.
